Drew Brees, wife Brittany to donate $5M to aid Louisiana during coronavirus pandemic

Saints quarterback Drew Brees and his wife, Brittany, have committed $5 million to the state of Louisiana to aid during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The $5 million represents 20 percent of Brees’ 2020 salary. That, according to his Instagram post, will be used in conjunction with several organizations — Second Harvest Food Bank, Ochsner Health Systems, Walk-Ons, Jimmy Johns, Smalls Sliders and Waitr — to prepare more than 10,000 meals for those in need.

Brittany and I are committing $5,000,000 to the State of Louisiana in 2020. The priority now is helping our communities get through this tough time. After considerable research and conversations with local organizations, we will be mobilizing our partnerships with Second Harvest Food Bank, Ochsner Health Systems, Walk-Ons, Jimmy Johns, Smalls Sliders and Waitr to prepare and deliver over 10,000 meals per day throughout Louisiana for as long as it takes to children on meal programs, seniors, and families in need. Let’s all do our part, maintain hope, and get through this together.

MORE: Sports figures who tested positive for COVID-19

Louisiana has 1,946 confirmed cases of COVID-19, per the CDC’s latest figures. The state is currently under a stay-at-home order issued by Gov. John Bel Edwards until April 12.

The spread of the coronavirus has affected Brees personally, as Saints coach Sean Payton is one of several sports figures who has tested positive for the viral disease.

Brees isn’t the only prominent Louisiana sports figure trying to provide aid during the pandemic, either. LSU coach Ed Orgeron delivered a “game plan” to help stem the spread of COVID-19, and New Orleans Pelicans rookie Zion Williamson pledged to cover the salaries of all workers at New Orleans’ Smoothie King Center over a month-long period.
