CDC: We are preparing as if this is the next Pandemic

UPDATE: 4:30EST 1/31/2020 – Trump Administration Issues Coronavirus Public Health Emergency – Quarantines on Americans who have been to Hubei province

This morning, The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that they had for the first time in 50 years issued a federal quarantine. The Quarantine order was for 195 passengers who repatriated to the U.S. from Wuhan China on January 29, 2020, to protect “their families and communities” as evacuees are monitored for coronavirus symptoms at March Air Reserve Base in Riverside, California. According to the CDC, the last federal quarantine was in the 1960s to contain the smallpox virus.

The CDC, under statutory authority of the Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary, has issued federal quarantine orders to all 195 United States citizens who repatriated to the U.S. on January 29, 2020. The quarantine will last 14 days from when the plane left Wuhan, China.

“We are preparing as this is the next pandemic, but hopeful this is not and will not be the case,” Dr. Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases, said on a call with reporters. “We would rather be remembered for overreacting to under-reacting.”

The rare move from the CDC comes as one of the passengers who returned to the U.S. attempted to leave the March Air Reserve Base in Riverside, California, after arriving from Wuhan, China.

This legal order is part of a public health response that is necessary to prevent the transmission and spread of this virus in the U.S. This federal quarantine will protect the health of the repatriated US citizens, their families, and their communities. #2019nCoV
